Prize money is rare

A few events pay. The Battle of the Martial Arts paid $15,000 to each 2024 grand champion. Most titles come with a ring and a photo.

The sport is split

NASKA, ISKA, USA Sport Karate, WKC and independent promoters each run their own events and rankings. No brand can buy "sport karate" in one deal.

Athletes carry the cost

Travel, gear, entry fees and injuries come out of the athlete's own pocket. There's no league insurance and no pay for showing up.

Kevin Thompson Jr. grew up on the mat at Shakil Warriors, the school his father founded in 1981, and has run it as CEO since 2019. He competes for Team USA, produces the Lil KA Youth Karate Championship, and builds the sites SKW athletes run on.
